Summer Under the Sun

Aug. 1-7 (Pr. 28-31)

Chapter 28

Vs. 1 “The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.”

It has been said “Fear is neither a reason to do something or not do something. It is rather a reason to question what one should do or not do.”

  1. Are fears governing your life? Sometimes fears are warranted but the reason to do something about it is based in prudence/righteousness and not the fear itself. Other times fear is unwarranted and the right thing requires a step of trust in the Lord.

  2. The righteous are as bold as a lion and fear does not hold us captive. Can this be said of you? What is an example?

Vs. 13 “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.”

Compare with James 5:15-16

  1. Maybe this verse was meant for you today. Is there something you have been concealing; unwilling to forsake? Is your hope to try and defy this proverb by continuing to conceal your sin, not forsaking it’s pleasure yet still hoping for prosperity?

  2. Seek out those who will help you abandon this issue for Christ. Confess and forsake. Set up accountability partners who will hold you up and challenge you to live for God.

Chapter 29

Vs. 25 “ The fear of man brings a snare, but he who trusts in the LORD will be exalted.”

Compare with Luke 12:4-5

  1. Who can attest to this truth? Please share with someone today.

Chapter 30

Vss. 5-6 “ Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Do not add to His words or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar.”

Compare with 2 Timothy 3:16.

  1. Do we recognize our limited perspective and bleak understanding of all things? There is only so much we can know. What if there was One who, with all knowledge, was willing to share with us secrets to abundant life, how much of yourself would you give to those words? God has done just this for us all by preserving His words in the scriptures. Are there areas of your life that have proven this over and over? Are there areas of your life that are not yielding to His truths? Why?

Chapter 31

  1. The first nine verses of Proverbs 31 include some wise things to do and some wise things not to do. List those. Take a few minutes to be silent before God and reflect on the list. Are there things you need to start doing or stop doing to walk in wisdom?

  2. The second half of Proverbs 31, is a poem, an alphabetic acrostic. The “famous” Proverbs 31 woman is not an actual woman. Does this change the way you read the passage? Explain.

  3. The capstone verse is  verse 30 - a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Where else in Proverbs has there been instruction on the fear of the Lord? How has it been linked to wisdom? What is your response?
