Today is a day of response to the insight of the Lord. We have been seeking God for the last several days as we read through chapter 19 of psalms and today we take a few minutes to respond to how the Lord has been speaking to us.
We respond today by first noticing the progression of response in Psalm 19
In this chapter, David writes in a posture of response. He begins by noticing the response of the heavens as they are declaring the glory of God, then he notices the beauty and power of the understanding and instruction of the Lord, and he responds a humble heart asking God to cleanse him and guide him in having acceptable words and an acceptable meditation of heart before the Lord.
David writes: “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the expanse proclaims the work of his hands. Day after day they pour out speech; night after night they communicate their knowledge.”
David says the “heavens declare” From the sky and from the stars the heavens and the expanse declare the glory and majesty of God, they show his massive power, beauty, and love.
Day after day and night after night they pour out their speech and knowledge, continually pouring out the goodness and glory of God without ceasing.
But not only does the sky declare God’s glory, but the understanding of the Lord also declares His glory as well.
“The instruction of the Lord is perfect renewing one’s life, the testimony of the Lord is trustworthy, making the inexperienced wise. The precepts of the Lord are right, making the heart glad; the command of the Lord is radiant, making the eyes light up. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are reliable and altogether righteous. They are more desirable than gold -- than an abundance of pure gold...”
David points out the beauty and power of living in the understanding of the Lord… by responding in obedience to the Lord’s understanding, His instruction, testimony, and ordinances we find: Renewing of life, wisdom, a glad heart, eyes of light, and value beyond pure gold.
So how does David respond to this understanding of the value of the Lord’s understanding and the picture of the heavens declaring the glory of God without Ceasing?
Point 3: he prays: “cleanse me from my hidden faults. Moreover, keep your servant from willful sins; do not let them rule me. then I will be blameless and cleansed from the blatant rebellion. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”
David sees his response needs to be one of submission and humility. Submitting to the Lord’s understanding and being humble enough to see he needs God to cleanse him and he needs God to help keep him from his willful sins.
David then closes by professing and requesting to the Lord that his words and meditation of his heart would be acceptable to God.
David in this psalm had a heart of much response.
David started by noticing the continual day and night response of the heavens and the expanse, how they always speak of the glory of God, he then notes the power and beauty of God’s understand and instruction. David then closes with His response to all of this, a response of submission and humility.
How will you respond?
We have spent the last several days meditating on this psalm on the words of David and now we come to the moment to respond.
I am responding today by seeking God on my knees, recognizing His glory, power, and beauty, and asking that He would guide my steps, as I surrender to His glory, understanding, and instruction.
How are you responding today?
