The Pathway Devotional #12 - Harry

posted by Church Bethel | May 30, 2019

Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.  To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily. Colossians 1:28-29

We’ll call him Harry, that’s close to his real Indian name. He grew up in a slum in a Hindu community. With not much else to do, the weekly Bible club provided a fun time of singing and stories and snacks. From the Bible club, he was invited to church and started coming along with other boys and girls.

This church was pretty different than the Hindu worship experience he observed. Mostly, the difference was the joy and hope of these “Christians”. Along the way, he understood and received the life-giving message of the gospel and declared himself no longer Hindu. He grew from the services and discipleship opportunities. His gifts for serving and for sharing his faith were quickly evident.

Although his English wasn’t too strong, when Harry preached in his first language, Hindi, it was evident he was gifted as a preacher as well. Years went by and many leaders poured into Harry’s life and ministry. Teams from other countries, including Bethel teams from Tri-Cities, added to Harry’s maturation. Invited to become part of the Church planting team was another step of equipping. As the team prayerfully prepared to launch a church plant, it was evident to all that Harry would become the lead pastor and main preacher for the plant.

On May 26, 2019 Harry preached the first sermon to a packed room in the center of that slum. Once there was no mention of Jesus within this entire community. But, from there developed a little Bible club which blossomed producing a Harry (and many others), all growing up loving Jesus. Each were gladly equipped to proclaim the name of Jesus. Now there is a new church loving and serving the slum community in the name of Jesus Christ.

It’s a powerful example of the ongoing process of maturation we are each called to participate in as disciples of Jesus. Think of all those who stood beside Harry to warn and teach him. Think about all who stood beside you to “present you mature in Christ”. Think about who God is asking you to stand beside today.

  1. Who stood beside you to inspire and teach you as you came to know Christ?
  2. Who might God be asking you to stand beside today for that same purpose?
  3. What might you need in the process of maturing in the Lord?
  4. Write out a prayer asking God to show you where He is leading you to grow, and to go.

In English, fellowship simply carries with it the meaning of friendship or companionship but in Greek, that’s not how they would have heard it. The word in Greek is Koinonia. This word is used in several different contexts and can be translated in a few different ways.
