How to Serve in Assistance

posted by Bethel Assistance | Mar 4, 2019

Bethel Assistance Ministry (BAM)
Bethel's Care and Compassion ministry exists to live out Galatians 6:2: "Bear one another's burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ."  This happens in a multitude of ways, so therefore, all spiritual gifts are utilized with this ministry.
To provide assistance for people in financial crisis, helping them move toward self-sufficiency with compassion and hope.
BAM is on the second Monday evening of each month, excluding January. Volunteers help serve in four areas (stations) on those nights:

Station #1: Intake - 5:30-6:30PM
Clients who are requesting assistance must fill out an application. Volunteers review paperwork, assist with applications, make photocopies, answer questions, etc. This is a great fit for people with administrative and organizational skills. Volunteers in this area serve for approximately one hour.

Station #2: Food and Food - 5:30-7:30PM
Bethel small groups volunteer to prepare a meal (FOOD #1), engage with the clients while finding a "window of opportunity" to introduce the gospel (FOOD #2), and help oversee the children's play area. Volunteers serve for approximately two hours at this station.

Station #3:  Interviews - 6:30-8:30PM
After dinner, teams of two volunteers interview clients. Those "teams of two" include married couples, plus married and single individuals who are paired together. The interviews generally take between 20-40 minutes, and teams usually interview three families per intake night.

Station #4:  Food Pantry - 6:30-8:30PM
Volunteers will assemble a food box for each of the families that apply for assistance. After the family has their interview, the food pantry volunteer will have an opportunity to pray with the family as they carry out the box of food to their car.

Please pray about whether the Lord might be leading you to help in our ministry. The only skills required are simple, but meaningful:
  • That you love the Lord and love His people, specifically those who are poor and needy
  • Remain faithful to your commitment to serve
