We got married just shy of 19 years old. We had very little knowledge of how to use our resources wisely, and frankly, a little selfish with the resources we did have. Three years later, the Lord blessed us with a baby, but still living paycheck to paycheck and none of it going back to God.
We thought that we didn't have anything to give to God. We didn't have the hope and faith that God would provide for us.
As we grow and mature in Christ, through biblical wisdom and sermons such as the one given by Dave Dawson this Sunday, we have figured out that God wants to bless us. But first we have to be willing to give generously and cheerfully.
I really liked the verse that Dave used from Mark 12: 41-44: "Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.
Calling His disciples to him, Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, pin in everything she had-- all she had to live on." We realized we needed to give to God in our poverty and become more wise with our finances so that we can eventually give more.
As we were accumulating debt, we made the decision that we did not want our treasure to be in earthly things. We wanted to store them up in heaven. Soon after, God provided a way for us to become more wise and be a faithful servant of what He gave us.
Our campus pastor facilitated a Financial Peace University class. The creator of this class, Dave Ramsey, taught us biblical principles to apply to our money so that we could give generously and cheerfully. We had a plan to help us get out of debt, stay out of debt, and live a life of freedom that Jesus wants for us.
If you or someone you know, needs some wise biblical financial counsel, I would highly recommend going through Financial Peace University. In the video, Dave Ramsey says that he is teaching you to how to live like no one else, so that eventually when you are debt free, you can live and give like no one else.
If you'd like to sign up for a class, we have one starting October 14th. Register today
