Dave Hilliard and Dale Shaver helped train pastors in Haiti the last week in January. Although political unrest in Haiti has been disruptive, God protected us and the pastors who came to the training. The only difficulty we experienced was a protest roadblock that prevented us from getting to the church we hoped to attend.
Seven years ago, Bethel helped Haitian Christian Mission (HCM) establish a plan where pastors from around the country gather four times a year for biblical, theological, ministry, and leadership training. This time Dave, Dale, two other American pastors, and several HCM leaders taught about fifty pastors from II Timothy and the book Defying Gravity: Surviving the Storms of Pastoral Ministry.
We also initiated a paradigm change by training six Haitian pastors who have agreed to do ongoing training of lay pastors and leaders in their regions of the country using a curriculum from Biblical Training Center for Pastors (BTCP). This new paradigm will allow better systematic, comprehensive, cohesive, replicable training by Haitian pastors. Bethel will continue to send a team once or twice a year to participate in a pastor's conference to encourage and guide implementation of the BTCP training.
