So, Just What Does a Stephen Minister Do?

posted by Pam Purvis | Aug 11, 2020

Over the past 2 years more than 50 Bethel members have been trained as Stephen Ministers. Many have been matched with people in crisis (Care Receivers) during that time, and yet, many people at Bethel do not know about our Stephen Ministry and what Stephen Ministers do.
Think of a Stephen Minister as an After Person – a trained Bethel member who will meet with you
…after the phone call you hoped you’d never get.
…after the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you.
…after the relationship falls apart and the bottom falls out of your life.
…after you lost your job.
…after a discouraging medical diagnosis.
…after the gavel comes down, the handcuffs go on and your loved one is led away.
…after the doctor says “there’s nothing more we can do”.

A Stephen Minister is a very good listener, who will walk beside you as you navigate the pathway ahead. No judgments here… just calm and comfort and compassion. A Stephen Minister will pray for you and with you. This is distinctively Christian, one-on-one support.
John 13:35 “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” NIV

Often, a Stephen Minister will have had similar experiences as the Care Receiver. This often provides an introductory sense of ‘at least they know some of what I am going through’. The Stephen Minister and the Care Receiver generally meet once a week in person, over Zoom or via text or phone.

Comment from a Care Receiver:
“It has been such a blessing to have someone to visit with, pray over me, pray for my children, surprise me with sweet cards to celebrate holidays and send me scriptures, when I need to hear them. My Stephen Minister has been a huge part of my life over the past year and few months as I walked through the uncertainty of divorce. I am so very thankful for her.” CT
